PLANTING TREES FOR TOMORROW

Arbor Day 2007

Arbor Day is a national holiday founded to celebrate trees and to encourage the planting of trees to improve the quality of our lives.  For additional information, click on www.arborday.org.

The second annual Dumont Arbor Day celebration took place at the Dixon Homestead Library.  Festivities commenced on April 21st with singing of the National Anthem by Sigrid Jaegersen Erickson, Mayor Matt McHale presented the Official Dumont Arbor Day Proclamation, and a special award was presented by Councilmen Harry Stylianou and Carl Manna to Bill Ebenhack, the new Superintendant of the Dumont DPW, for the tremendous effort made in 2006 to clean up the disaster of over 30 trees lost in the fall storms. Michael Dobias, founding member of the The Ad-Hoc Committee for the Formation of the Dumont Shade Tree Commission, announced the 2007 Contest Award Winners, attendees viewed the Art and Poetry Exhibit and enjoyed refreshments provided by Girl Scout Troop 108.

The grand finale of the ceremony was the planting of a new “Copper” Beech Tree on the front lawn of the library to match one donated several years ago by the Grant School class of Mrs. Carol Banicky.  These two trees replace those from the library’s history as seen in the photograph below. While many people remember only one tree, this historic research shows that there were two trees lost many years ago, one earlier than the other.
